History of port

The foundation of the Port of Kherson is considered the day of the founding of the fortress and the shipyard by the decree of Empress Catherine II of June 18, 1778

The city was created to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire. To strengthen them, it was decided to build a city at the mouth of the Dnieper with a shipyard, a commercial pier and a fortress, which were to become the base for the creation of the Black Sea fleet. The name of the city was given in honor of the ancient Greek and later Byzantine colony of Tauric Chersonesos. In 1803, Kherson received the status of a provincial center, its first coat of arms and began to develop as a commercial port. For large cargo transportation, the port was not used for a long time due to the insufficient depth of the Dnieper.

At the beginning of the XIX century. the city became a major center for civil shipbuilding. Kherson continued to develop and from here were sent abroad timber, wool, bacon, wheat, copper, fish; imported thin cloth, silk, spices.

Only at the end of the 1890s. After deepening the shipping channel through the Kherson seaport, grain was exported in large quantities, and by 1900 the port became the fourth largest exporter in the Russian Empire with an annual cargo turnover of almost 900,000 tons.

During the years of Soviet power, the port underwent technical reconstruction: the depth and width of the navigable canal were increased, mechanized berths, warehouses, and industrial buildings were built. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the port economy was destroyed and in the post-war period it was restored. By the end of the 1970s. the port's cargo turnover approached 4 mln tons, and the mechanization of loading and unloading operations exceeded 90%.

The Kherson Commercial Sea Port is a modern enterprise that is part of the unified transport complex of Ukraine. On September 12, 2019, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine announced the holding of a concession tender for the transfer of the property of the State Enterprise "KCSP" to concession.

The Kherson Commercial Sea Port became the first object in the port industry of Ukraine, transferred to a concession. The state competition was won by the company RISOIL S.A., which received the management of the port property for a period of 30 years.
